The documentary SKI is based on the famous skier Nikolai Schirmer, who hears that his childhood friend, Vegard Rye, will go on an unusual ski trip in the spring of 2024: The trip will go over 27 mountains in Northern Norway, non-stop, over four days. The film premieres in Norwegian cinemas on January 31.
Internationally renowned skier and filmmaker Nikolai Schirmer discovers that his reclusive childhood friend is training for an extraordinary ski trip:
Vegard Rye is training to climb and ski down 27 mountains in one continuous summit trip. The trip is the equivalent of running four marathons, while also climbing Mount Everest from sea level – three times. To accomplish this inhuman feat, Vegard isolates himself from friends and family, lives in caves, and dedicates his entire life to training. For years, he carries heavy loads up the same mountain multiple times a day.
Vegard has no plans to tell a soul about his feat, but Nikolai wants to share his friend's story with the world, and sell it to his sponsors as "The Greatest Ski Tour Of All Time". Nikolai also tries to adopt his friend's training methods, in order to elevate his own skiing to new heights. However, Nikolai quickly realizes that it is easier to tell a story than to live it. At the same time, the big question hangs over him: Why did he lose his best friend and mountain partner so many years ago?
